EDITH CAVELL MESHEAU

MESHEAU, EDITH CAVELL Edith Cavell Mesheau, age 86, passed away suddenly at her home in Sackville on Friday, December 10, 2004. Born in Sackville, she was daughter of the late Ross and Jemima (Campbell) Phinney. After graduating from Sackville High School at the age of 16, Cavell began working for the Sackville Tribune Post as a Linotype operator. She later worked in the accounting department at Eaton's in Moncton and met Harvey Mesheau in that city. They married in 1943 and, in 1951, returned to Sackville, where they raised five children. Once her family had grown, Cavell earned her real estate license and spent several years with Johnstone Realty. After their retirement, Cavell and Harvey spent summers at the Mesheau family farm in Kent County and traveling. They especially enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren. Cavell continued to be an active volunteer, canvassing for the Red Cross, the Cancer Society, and other charities. She was a member of the Lord Sackville Chapter of the IODE, the United Church Women, and the Village Club. Since moving to the Drew cottages in 2002 she spent a lot of time walking in the Sackville Waterfowl Park nearby and on inclement days she persisted by using her treadmill to walk at home. She maintained several bird feeders and a robust flower garden just outside her cottage window. Christmas was a special time of year for her and she was preparing favourite traditional Christmas treats for her family in her kitchen when she passed away. Cavell will be sadly missed by her five children, Darrell (Brenda Stead) of Fredericton, Michael (Mary) of Burton NB, Peter (Cathy Fynn) of Sackville, Susan of Fredericton, and Shawn (Angie) of Sackville; her fourteen grandchildren, Alison, Ryan, Meghan, Phoebe, Alanna, Colin, Tessa, Graeme, Patrick, Maggie, Jake, Sarah, Kyle, and Luke; her sister, Ruby Ayer, and three brothers, Jim (Dolly), Otis (Edna), and Bill (Phyllis), all of Sackville. Cavell was predeceased by her husband Harvey in 1998; by three sisters, Eva Brown, Connie Carter, and infant Margaret Rose Phinney; and by two brothers, Donald and Gerald. Visitation will be at the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB E4L 3N9 (364-1300) on Monday evening, December 13 from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Sackville United Church on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at 2 pm, Rev. John Perkin officiating. Donations may be made to the Sackville United Church, Sackville Community Cheer, the Drew Nursing Home, the Sackville Memorial Hospital - Auxiliary or Foundation, the St. Ann's Anglican Church in Westcock, or a charity of the donor's choice. www.jonesfuneralhome.ca
