
GERALD ALLEN BISHOP
BISHOP, GERALD ALLEN After a courageous battle with cancer, Gerald Allen Bishop passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Thursday August 18, 2005 at the age of 64. Gerald was the president and owner of Bishop's Funeral Home Ltd. Gerald began working at the funeral home in 1965. He apprenticed for three years under his father, Clowes after which time he successfully passed his examinations and became a certified embalmer in October 1976. He soon thereafter received his funeral director's license and joined the New Brunswick Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association. He was a very active and devoted member serving on several committees and on the Executive for seven years. He was President of the Association in 1989-1990. In 1981, the minister of Health appointed Gerald as a member of the Board for Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, a position he proudly held until 2001, having served as Chairperson of the Board five times over a twenty year period. He was currently the New Brunswick representative on the board of directors of the Funeral Service Association of Canada, a position he held since April 16, 1998. Over the years, Gerald attended many Atlantic and National conventions all over the country, usually serving as the auctioneer during the fund raising evenings for the Children's Wish Foundation. One year in St. John's Nfld, he was more than pleased to be the official announcer for the races, not with horses but with lobsters. Gerald was a member of the Fredericton Horseman's Association & USTA, track announcer at Fredericton Raceway for 42 years, as well as announcing at several other tracks in the Maritimes. He owned several race horses over the years. Gerald was known as the man for all seasons, also being the public address announcer for the Fredericton Express & Fredericton Canadians hockey teams, many local sporting events as well as auctioneering for several local charities. Gerald also refereed hockey and umpired baseball both locally & provincially. A past member of Nashwaaksis Lions Club, he was very actively involved with their bingos. Survived by his wife Kathy (Miles) Bishop, children Lee (Erika) of Fredericton, Lisa Lambert (Mark) of Ottawa, Jim (Georgette) of Hanwell; father Clowes M. Bishop of Fredericton, brother Donald (Stephanie) of Fredericton, grandchildren Lauren, Daniel & John Lambert; nieces nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles. Predeceased by his mother Irene Bishop and son Daniel. Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton with visitation Saturday from 2-4 & 7-9 and Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held Monday, August 22, 2005 at 2:00 pm at Grace Memorial United Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Hapeman officiating, assisted by Father Jack Dolan and Rev. Elaine Hamilton. Interment will be held at the Rural Cemetery Extension. Contribution to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
