CHARLOTTE JEAN GLENCROSS
GLENCROSS, CHARLOTTE JEAN Charlotte Jean Glencross, born May 5, 1949 in Montreal, died October 26, 2007 in Fredericton, of cancer. Survived by her husband, Jon Thompson; her mother, Gwendolin Glencross; brother, Roderick Glencross; and sister-in-law, Penny Glencross. Charlotte was an accomplished artist in weaving, tapestry, water color, batik and ikat, well known for her extraordinary gifts in color, texture and conception, as well as for her fine skill and attention to detail. Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), Concordia University, 1970; Bachelor of Arts (History), UNB, 1991; Diploma in Weaving, New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, 1976; Apprenticeships in Tapestry, Germany and France, 1978-79. She was a self-employed studio artist for 20 years, then a NB government program officer and administrator for fine arts and crafts for 10 years, before returning to her own studio in 2000. She served on boards of fine arts and crafts organizations provincially and nationally for many years. Throughout her working life she was a tireless advocate for the arts and crafts community. Charlotte led the community volunteer project that brought about the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, to which she devoted most of the last seven years of her life. Her work on the New Brunswick Arts Board and on the Charlotte Street Arts Centre was recognized in 2006 by an Excellence Award from the Province of New Brunswick in 2006 and the Paul Harris Award from the Fredericton Rotary Club in 2005. She was an avid gardener, canoeist and skier. Interment will take place in St. Mark's Cemetery, Douglastown, NB on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 2:00 pm. The family wish to thank the medical, nursing, technical and support staff of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for the excellent care Charlotte received during her illness.
