JOHN PATRICK GILLIS

GILLIS, JOHN PATRICK (Pat) Suddenly at home on Monday November 26th, 2007. Pat is survived by daughters, Teresa and Patricia (Gary Moffat) Edmonton AB, son Gregory (Diane) Fredericton, NB, and granddaughters, Cara (Jeff Lawler) Huntington Beach CA, and Kaitlyn, Montreal PQ, brothers, Alan, Antigonish NS, and Simon and sister, Margaret, Dartmouth NS. Predeceased by wife, Joan (nee Connolly), wife Vera (nee Chernichan) father John Alec, mother Maria and sister Helen. Born in Southwest Margaree, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on March 23, 1921 Pat was the eldest son in a family of five. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW2 and was the only survivor from the crash of a Wellington Bomber in England. After being rescued, he recuperated first in England and later in southern New Brunswick. After the war he moved to Toronto to work construction during the post war boom. He then moved to Peterborough to join the Peterborough Police Force from 1951 and retired as Staff Sergeant in 1981. Pat was an avid golfer recording 5 holes in one on the Peterborough Liftlock Golf Course during his 26 years of retirement. He enjoyed art and taught drawing in schools and at the Millbrook Penitentiary while continuing as an active volunteer in many other capacities. He loved gardening, cooking, attending church and his daily walks. He had an exceptional sense of humour and an enormous capacity for life. He had incredible wisdom and was very ingenious at many things. Pat spoke few words however his life was marked by unending curiosity and thought. He will be sadly missed by his family, neighbours, relatives and friends who all knew and loved him dearly. The family thanks the neighbors of Ware Street for their many years of kindness and friendship. Closing statement: the newspaper's just arrived, I have to do my crossword, I'll just be a minute! Funeral was held on Monday, December 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Parish, 208 Romaine Street in Peterborough, Ontario. Burial was at St. Peter's Cemetery.
