REV. CANON H. RHODES COOPER

COOPER, REV. CANON H. RHODES Rev. Rhodes died, January 22, 2009 after a short illness at the Health Science Centre, St. John's, NL. He is predeceased by his parents and first wife, Margaret. He leaves to mourn his five children; Susan (James) Adams, St. John's, Nancy Osberg (Denise Clarke), Oakville, ON; Deborah (Christopher) Davey, St. Aubin, Jersey, Channel Islands, Beth Cooper (Joe Danko), Edmonton, Alberta, Timothy (Lucie Charpentier), Sherbrooke, Quebec. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his brother Robert (Bob) Cooper of Brantford, ON; sister Joan Ferguson, Vancouver, BC and sister-in-law Mary Lane, Riverview, NB as well as many nieces and nephews. Leaving with fond memories, Ruby Dewling and his four step children, David (Linda), Douglas (Edwina), Joan Dewling (Diane) and Janice (Norman) Van de Spiegle. Canon Cooper graduated from the University of King's College, Halifax with a BA and BSLitt in 1948 and received an Honourary Doctor of Divinity in 1972. In 1977 he earned a Masters of Sacred Theology from Union Theological College, New York. He was ordained deacon, December 17, 1947 and priest July 10, 1949. He has served in the diocese of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and as Dean of the Cathedral in Fredricton, NB. During his 61 years of service he was on the Executive of each of the Diocese and was elected eight times as a delegate of General Synod. He served on a number of National and Diocesean Committees. From 1988-90 he was Formation Officer at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax after which he retired to St. John's, NL. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all those at Cambridge Estates for their kindness and loving care. Resting at St. Thomas' Anglican Church, Military Road, St. John's, NL (entrance through the Tower Door) with public visitation on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. A Requiem Eucharist will be held at St. Thomas' Church on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. followed by cremation. Inurnment will take place at St. Alban's Columbarium in All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, NS at a later date. No flowers by request. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution may give to Christ Church Cathedral.
