SPENCER JOSEPH BERNARD
BERNARD, SPENCER JOSEPH Spencer Joseph Bernard, of Fredericton, New Brunswick died peacefully surrounded by his family on November 12th, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 60. He was the beloved son of Joseph and the late Isabel Bernard. Spencer is survived by his treasured wife Elaine (nee Simpson, Coy), his loving daughter Vicki (husband Joshua Wall, grandson Logan), his dear son Spencer Dean (wife Amanda Gilmore). His step-children Stacy Coy (husband Steven Lewis, son Thomas) and Mark Coy (wife Kerstin, children Gradyn and Morgan) were dear members of his family. He is also survived by his brother Robert Jones (wife Sharon, nephew Rocky and family). Born in Fredericton, Spencer was a graduate of UNB's Master of Education program and spent over 33 years as a teacher, primarily at Minto Memorial High School. In addition to teaching he was an active member of the New Brunswick Teacher's Association prior to his retirement two years ago. He loved helping others both in his professional and private life, and could be relied on for both an ear to listen and a ready joke. Spencer made everyone laugh out loud. Known for his antics and the life of the party, his smiling face will be missed by those that loved him, including his faithful dog Jasper. Spencer's interests and hobbies reflected his interest in the past and hopes for the future, with a love of Civil War history and all things Star Trek, but his grounding in the present had him a faithful Member and Officer of the Alexandria Lodge #33 F.&A.M. Spencer loved the outdoors and spending time with his friends hunting, kayaking, and traveling. He loved his gardens and planted a seed of joy in each life he touched. A special thank you is extended to the doctors and nurses at the Oncology Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Rose Beyond the Wall by A.L. Frink A rose once grew where all could see, sheltered beside a garden wall, And as the days passed swiftly by, it spread its branches, straight and tall... One day, a beam of light shone through a crevice that had opened wide ~ The rose bent gently toward its warmth then passed beyond to the other side Now, you who deeply feel its loss, be comforted ~ the rose blooms there ~ its beauty even greater now, nurtured by God's own loving care The family will receive visitors at Mcadam's Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton (458-9170), on Monday, November 16th, 2009 from 3-6 PM. The funeral service will take place at Christ Church (Parish) Church on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 at 5:00 PM with The Rev. Anthony Kwaw officiating.
