DR. JOSEPH A. MacDOUGALL

MacDOUGALL, DR. JOSEPH A.- the death of Dr. Joseph A. MacDougall of 20 Queen Square South, husband of M. Kathleen (Mooney) MacDougall, occurred unexpectedly at Rocmaura Nursing Home on Monday, September 30, 2002. Dr. MacDougall was born in Sydney, N.S., a son of the late Allan and Florence (MacGillivray) MacDougall. Dr. MacDougall graduated from St. Francis Xavier and Dalhousie Universities and completed his post-graduate studies at McGill. He served as a physician during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Goose Bay, Labrador, and was a member of R.C.A.F. Association 250 Wing. He has resided in Saint John since 1950. He was a general practitioner and anesthetist until his retirement in 1993. ?Dr. MacDougall was always active in professional and civic affairs having served as Mayor of Saint John from 1967 to 1969 and later as a Common Councillor from 1986 to 1989. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada from 1955 to 1957 and again from 1981 to 1984. In 1989 he received the Dr. J. A. McMillan Award from Blue Cross for his devotion and dedication to improving the quality of life for others. In that year he also received an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from St. Thomas University. He was a Life Member of the New Brunswick Medical Society; an Honourary Member of the New Brunswick Dental Society; and a member of the N.B. Right to Life Association and of the Legion of Mary. He had been Chairman of the Board of the West Saint John Community Hospital as well as being a member of the Board of Directors of the Saint John General Hospital and of the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was pre-deceased by a son, John Paul; and a brother, John William. Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, Dr. Joseph A. of Lincoln, N.B., Robert E. (Carol Anne) of Winnipeg, John M. "Jack" (Frances) of Fredericton, Allan B. (Aline) of Lincoln, and J. Colin (Jenny) of St. Stephen; seven daughters, M. Suzanne, Mrs. James Cuttle of Markham, Ont., Jane M. Waldron of Bedford, N.S., Mary K., Mrs. Barry Morrison of Saint John, M. Eileen of Saint John, Ann M. of Fredericton, Dr. M. Elizabeth, Mrs. Brian Phillips of Sussex, and ?Martha M., Mrs. Patrick Desmond of Rothesay; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Francis of Halifax, and Mrs. Florence Dundon of Cape Cod; forty-one grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. ?????????? Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., from where the funeral will be held on Friday morning at 10:30 to St. John the Baptist Church for Mass of Christian Burial at eleven o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
