
DR. JOSEPH A. MACDOUGALL
MACDOUGALL, DR. JOSEPH A. - The death of Dr. Joseph A. MacDougall of 20 Queen Square South occurred unexpectedly and peacefully in Saint John, N.B. on Monday morning, September 30, 2002. He was 85 years of age. He was married to M. Kathleen Mooney on January 29, 1944; he was a devoted husband for 58 years. Dr. MacDougall was born on January 2, 1917 in Sydney, N.S., a son of the late Allan and Florence (MacGillivray) MacDougall. Dr. MacDougall graduated from Sydney Academy (1934), from St. Francis Xavier University (1938, B.Sc.), from Dalhousie University (1943, M.D.C.M.) and completed his post-graduate studies at McGill University. He served as a physician during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force Medical Branch in Goose Bay, Labrador (1943-46), and was a member of R.C.A.F. Association 250 Wing. Dr. McDougall interned at the Saint John General Hospital. He served as an anaesthetist at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, N.S. (1947-50) and as a physician at St. Francis Xavier University. Dr. MacDougall resided in Saint John since 1950. He was a general practitioner and an anaesthetist at the Saint John General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital in Saint John, and the Saint John Regional Hospital until his retirement in 1993. He was?an Associate Professor of Anaesthesia at Dalhousie University. Dr. MacDougall was always active in professional and civic affairs, having served as Mayor of Saint John from 1967 to 1969 and as a Common Councillor from 1986 to 1989. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada from 1955 to 1957 and again from 1981 to 1984, after first being elected to the Board of Directors in 1948, and retiring from the Board in 1991. He served as President of the Board of Directors of Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada from 1957 to 1958. In 1989 he received the Dr. J. A. McMillan Award from Blue Cross for his excellence in improving the quality of life for others. In that year he also received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from St. Thomas University. In 1990 he was uniquely granted Honorary Membership in the New Brunswick Dental Society in recognition of outstanding service to dentistry.Dr. MacDougall was a life member of the New Brunswick Medical Society; a member of the New Brunswick Right to Life Association, a member of the Legion of Mary; a member of St. Andrew's Society; a member of Probus; and a founding member of the South End Day Care. He had been Chairman of the Board of the West Saint John Community Hospital, a board member of the Saint John General Hospital, and a charter member of the board of the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was pre-deceased by an infant son, John Paul; an infant grandson, Christopher Waldron; and a brother, John William.Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons; seven daughters; twenty-five grandsons; sixteen granddaughters; three great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; two sisters; two nephews; four nieces; two brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; SONS: Dr. Joseph A. of Lincoln, N.B. Colin (Jenny) of St. Stephen (Celia, Mary Kate, Ross, and Jane); DAUGHTERS: M. Suzanne, Mrs. James Cuttle of Markham, Ont. (Alison, Andrew, Meagan, Colin, and Mark), Jane M. Waldron of Bedford, N.S. (Christopher, and John), Mary K., Mrs. Barry Morrison of Saint John (Bridget, Alec, Matthew, and Benjamin), M. Eileen of Saint John (Nicholas and Aaron), Ann M. of Fredericton, Dr. M. Elizabeth, Dr. Brian Phillips of Sussex (Joseph, Patrick, Colin, Michael, and Mary Kate), and Martha M., Mrs. Patrick Desmond of Rothesay (Anthony, Michael, Sean, and Kathleen); GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Breanna, Brogan, Will, Ireland, Kaleigh, Jack, and Alex; SISTERS: Mrs. Irene Francis of Halifax, and Mrs. Florence "Babe" Dundon of Cape Cod, Mass.; NIECES AND NEPHEWS: Kevin, Billy, Alaine, Patricia, Mary Irene, and Jane; IN-LAWS: Connie, Geraldine, Barbara, John, Evelyn, Patrick, and Gertrude. ??? Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., from where the funeral will be held on Friday morning at 11:45 to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for Mass of Christian Burial at twelve o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
