CAPTAIN JOHN MACARTHUR
MACARTHUR, CAPTAIN JOHN - At the St. Joseph's Hospital on June 3, 2004 Captain John Macarthur of Saint John East. Husband of the late Gloria H. (Olive) Macarthur. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland he was the son of the late David C. and Dorothy B.P. (Forwell) Macarthur. Educated in Scotland, Capt. Macarthur went to sea at an early age and was at sea on a Canadian ship when WWII broke out; he served in the Canadian Merchant Navy during the length of the War, sailing in dangerous waters during the Battle of the Atlantic. For his War efforts he received the War Medal 1939-45, Atlantic Star, 1939-45 star, Africa Star and Clasp and the Burma Star. Captain Macarthur taught from 1950-1958 at the Saint John Vocational School and coached the Voc Rugby team of 1957 to the city champions. At Voc he taught math and also operated a Navigational school at night. Capt. Macarthur was employed from 1958 until retirement as a ships agent with RC Elkin, J.T. Knight & Montreal Shipping. He was also the Measuring Surveyor of Tonnage for the federal Dept. of Transport and for a time was the Lloyd's of London Sub agent. Capt. Macarthur was a founding member of the Fundy Chapter of the Company of Master Mariners and was the former Divisional Master. He was a member of the Royal Order of Wharf Rats and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Navy Association and the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association. He was very active and gave a lot of his time to the Seaman's Mission located on the West side of Saint John. Capt. Macarthur was honored by the Government of Canada by being one of 50 members of the Canadian Merchant Navy to go to England for the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic held in Liverpool, England. Capt. Macarthur was the first member of the Canadian Merchant Navy in Saint John to take the Salute in the Remembrance Day Parade after the Government of Canada recognized the members of the Merchant Navy as Veterans. He has been a long time member of St. Mary's - St. Bartholomew Anglican Church and was a member of the Mens Club of the Church. Captain Macarthur is survived by one son Ian D. Macarthur of Saint John East; three grandchildren John (Sophie) Macarthur of Halifax, NS, Gordon M. Macarthur of Victoria, BC, Andrew S. Macarthur of Saint John East; two great grandchildren Riley A. and Megan A. Macarthur, as well as several nieces and nephews. Resting at the A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) with visitation on Saturday and Sunday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Mary & St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church on Monday June 7th at 11am. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Following the interment a reception will be held at St. Mary & St. Bartholomew's Church. A tribute to a Veteran Service will be held at the funeral home Sunday at 7pm. www.awcavanagh.com
