O'BRIEN, JOHN CHARLES - Peacefully, at the Saint John Regional Hospital on June 7, 2005 in his 65th year. Dear husband of Clara (Keon) and son of the late Dr. James B. and M. Eileen (Callaghan) O'Brien. Loving father of Mary-Eileen Flanagan and her husband Kevin of Saint John, Maureen O'Brien of Ottawa, Timothy O'Brien and his wife Cyndi Brannen of Dartmouth, NS, and Colleen O'Brien and her fiance Jonathan Treen of Halifax, NS and Esquimalt, BC. Beloved grandfather of T.J. McNulty, Aidan O'Brien, Kate, Ryan, and John Charles (Jack) Flanagan. Loving brother of Dr. J. Michael O'Brien and his wife Sue of Arisaig NS, Nora Karsch and her husband Fred of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and William P. O'Brien of Ottawa. John will be sadly missed by his uncles Father Thomas O'Brien CSsR and Vincent Callaghan, by his aunts Joan Callaghan and Ellen Maxwell, by many cousins (especially Mary K. O'Brien and Sister Mary Ann Maxwell SCIC), and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. John was a lifelong resident of West Saint John. He graduated from St. Malachy's Memorial High School in 1958 and from St. Francis Xavier University in 1962. He began teaching that year at St. John the Baptist School, later moving to Montreal where he met Clara. They returned to Saint John in 1967 where he taught at St. Peter's School for 23 years. John was an active Naval Reservist from 1959 to 1994, achieving the rank of Commander and receiving the Maritime Commander's Commendation from Vice Admiral Thomas in 1989. Since retiring from teaching and the Naval Reserves in 1994, he welcomed one and all to his camp, the "Standeasy" at McDougall Lake and particularly loved his time spent there with his brother-in-law Fred Karsch. John was an avid fisherman, a tireless "Mr. Fix-it", and a devoted husband, father and "Papa". Friends may call at the Castle Funeral Home Fallsview Chapel, 309 Lancaster Avenue, West Saint John (634-1701) on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 12 o'clock. Private interment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers and in memory of John, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Saint John Community Foundation, the Oncology Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital, or Romero House.
