ROBERT F. MD. CM. BA. FRCS(C) SBST. J. SCHARF

SCHARF, ROBERT F. MD. CM. BA. FRCS(C) SBST. J. - (Surviving Brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem), Bridgewater. Born in Saskatoon in 1924, son of the late E. F. Scharf, late president of the Cooperative Union of Sask. and Mabel F. Scharf, late daughter of Charles Beck, pioneer mayor of Yorkton, Sask. and Ellen Riddell Beck, pioneer of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. An honors graduate of Neudorf High School and of Regina College graduate of the University of Saskatchewan with great distinction. Dr. Scharf graduated in medicine from McGill in 1948. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in General Surgery and a certificate in Orthopedics Surgery. He spent 10 years as a Lt. Col. in the Canadian Army. His further career was as a pioneer university emergency department director in Halifax, NS and Saint John, NB as Chairman of the Nova Scotia Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons. He organized the first clinical courses for ambulance attendants in NS. He attended four Canada Games and was medical chairman for the 1985 Summer Games in Saint John, NB. University appointments were to the Universities of Ontario, Southern California and Dalhousie NS. He received the Award of Merit of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. He was a serving brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He was Chairman of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation's Emergency Cardiac Care Committee and was responsible for putting defibrillators in ambulances in several New Brunswick localities and for wide spread instruction in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. On retirement, he was presented with a certificate of honor by the City of Saint John NB. For services rendered. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Black); children, Michelle (Dennis) Kolba, Calgary, Daniel Michael (Brenda) Scharf, Cambridge, ONT, Laurel (Francis) Joudrey, New Germany, Patricia (Gary) Stone, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Rebecca, Allison and Philip Morley, Calgary; Hannah, Krista and Mikayla Joudrey, New Germany, Thomas and Robert Stone, Dartmouth; brothers, Forest Larry Scharf, Riverside, FL, Charles Ralph Scharf, Thunder Bay, ONT, Murray Patrick Scharf, Saskatoon, SK; sisters, June McFadden, Silvan Lake, AB, Patricia Brown, Calgary, AB. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Wesley Scharf of Saskatoon, SK Visitation will be held Sunday, July 15 from 7 to 9pm in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater and from where funeral service will be held 11am Monday, Rev Robert Zinck officiating. Family flowers only.
