NEIL MacMULLIN
MacMULLIN, NEIL - Neil Osborne MacMullin of Kings College Road, Fredericton passed away in the Palliative Care Unit at the Chalmers Hospital in the early hours of October 21, 2007. Neil was nearing his 93rd birthday, but had spent his last year struggling with ALS. Neil spent his early years working on the family farm and in the woods of York County. In 1942, he received an invitation to join the military and spent four years in England, Italy, France and Holland in the Signal Corps. After the war, Neil settled in Saint John, began a 34 year career with NB Tel, married his sweetheart and began raising his family in the North End. He was active in the Young Married Couple's Club at St. Luke's Anglican Church. In 1961, Neil and family moved to Fredericton, where Neil began a 45 year relationship with his church, Christ Church (Parish) Church. His faith and the fellowship with his Parish Church family have sustained him in his most difficult times. Neil had a number of volunteer activities which were very important to him. He was a past Grand Master of the Orange Lodge of NB, having recently received a 70 year pin. For many years, Neil was in charge of maintenance at Camp Medley in Gagetown. He was touched when a new building was named after him. Neil also was very active in the Telephone Pioneers. After retirement, Neil spent his winters snow blowing his neighbors' driveways as a pastime. However, his real volunteer work was done in family circles as he used his handyman skills to fix plumbing, build cottages, run cement, "you name it" - he was always first on the list to be called when help was needed. Neil loved gardening, baking pies, picking apples, visiting his relations to keep the connections strong. His unconditional love and friendship for all, his positive nature (even in deepest adversity), his easy smile and humour, his deep faith, his ability to find good in everyone he met served him and his family well. Neil led by example and was much loved and respected by friends and family. Neil would often say "I think we can make that work". He always had time for friends, neighbours and family. Born in Magaguadavic on November 14, 1914, Neil was the son of Robert Roy Raymond McMullin and Alice Bertha (Bertie) Grieve; grandson of John McMullin & Catherine Fisher and John (Jack) Henry Grieve and Charlotte Isabella (Belle) Coburn. Neil is survived by two daughters, June (Brad Banerd) MacMullin of Singapore and Wendy (Shawn) O'Connor of Ottawa; four sons, Gyvangel Alayai (Terry) of Fort Erie, David (Barb) of Harvey, Frederick (Barb) of Fredericton, Roy (Nancy) of Moncton; daughter-in-law, Monique MacMullin of Moncton; grandchildren, Joshua and Glenn MacMullin, Carolyn (Troy) Poirier and Jonathan MacMullin, Melissa and Stephanie MacMullin, Heather, Elizabeth and Katherine Banerd, Brendan, Lauren, Colleen and Kelly O'Connor; great grandchildren, Nora and Mitchell Poirier; sisters-in-law, Irene McMullin, Ruth McMullin, Blanche Shaw; many nieces and nephews. Neil was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Helen Louise (Forrest) who passed away in October 2001; infant daughter, Brenda; sisters, Blanche Rae and Fern Grant; brothers, Milton, Medley, and Roland McMullin and Albert Shaw. As he met his final challenge with ALS, he had wonderful support from the medical community, DVA, Extramural, and the Red Cross caregivers (especially Nell and Lena who were special to Neil). The family would like to thank all those who provided that needed care with so much compassion. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home, Fredericton, NB. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 24 at 2 PM at Christ Church (Parish) Church, Wesmorland St, Archdeacon John Sharpe officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Magundy. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Church (Parish) Church, ALS Society, Alzheimer's Society or Harvey High School Scholarship Fund. www.mcadamsfh.com
