HUGHES, REGINA "JEAN" ELIZABETH (BRITT) - The death of Regina "Jean" Elizabeth (Britt) Hughes, wife of the late Merlyn "Tex" Hughes, occurred on April 14, 2009, at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Jean was born May 9, 1926, and was a daughter of the late George Albert and Winnifred (Walsh) Britt of Saint John, NB. Jean graduated from St. Vincent's High School in 1943, and then went to Mount Carmel where she studied Stenography (Commercial) in 1944. During the war she worked at Gaptor 2 Naval Reserve as a Steno in Saint John. She was a long time member of St. John the Baptist Church from childhood, where she was a member of the CWL and performed in musicals held at the church while she was a teen. After WWII, Jean worked for the Dept. of Agriculture in Ottawa, ON; it was in Ottawa in the Blessed Sacrament Church on October 31, 1947, where she married her husband Tex. In 1948, Jean and Tex moved back to Saint John, and they were blessed with their only child Maureen. Jean was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church from 1967 to 2003, when she entered Rocmaura Nursing Home, Trinity Court (Alzheimer's) Unit. She is survived by her daughter and only child, Maureen and special niece Karen Johnston, as well as several nieces and nephews. She as the last surviving member of her immediate family - the Britts, parents, Winnifred and George; sisters, Gertrude Johnston and Doris Crabbe; brothers, Albert, Cyril and Roy. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima, Milford Road, on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 10:00 am. Interment to take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society (Atlantic Division), or to the charity of the donor's choice. www.brenansfh.com
