It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, Betty Jean MacNeil, 70, of Glace Bay. Betty passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Petites, N.L., in 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Anderson) Courtney. Betty was a member of St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen.
A devoted family mentor, mom was also an avid 45s card player until her illness over a year ago, playing at the St. John’s Parish Hall, Glace Bay Pensioner’s Club, St. Leo’s Parish Hall and Gardiner Mines Pensioner’s Club.
Mom spent many summers with her best friend and companion, Don at their trailer in Lake Ainslie.
Betty will be sadly missed by her only son, Joseph (Neldie), Glace Bay; daughters, Donna (Paul), Gardiner Mines, Irene, Glace Bay, Karen (Wayne), Glace Bay, and Lynda (Robert), with whom she resided; eight cherished grandchildren, Shalene, Brittany, Greg, Jessica, Tyler, Miranda, Kelsey and Logan. Also Betty leaves behind her loving and devoted partner, Don Brushett; brother, Claude (Vera), North Sydney; sisters, Freda, Glace Bay, and Nina, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Earl (1986) and a sister, Cedella.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Donations in mom’s memory may be made to Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society.
