DOUGLAS ARNOLD FLOWER

FLOWER, DOUGLAS ARNOLD - The death of Douglas Arnold Flower of Fredericton, NB formerly of Minto, NB occurred Thursday, July 30th, 2009 at the Chalmer's Regional Hospital. Born in New Zion, NB he was the son of the late Charles and Cora (Robinson) Flower. As a member of the first graduating class of Minto High School, Doug went on to graduate from the Fredericton Business College. He returned to Minto and began his working career in the coal mining industry with W. Benton Evans. Thus began a series of lifelong commitments: to the coal mining industry in New Brunswick; his church as a deacon, treasurer and trustee; his community as a Village Councilor and Deputy Mayor, and to the Province serving as an MLA from 1967-70. He was instrumental in the construction of the Centennial Arena in Minto and the new United Baptist Church. Never truly retired, he continued to enjoy his garden and his workshop until his health, at age 90, prevented him from doing so. He touched many lives as a mentor, friend, and above all, as a true gentleman. Of special pride to him was the fact that all seven of his grandchildren have university degrees. There will always be fond memories of talks on the garden bench with Altie and summers spent at Douglas Harbour surrounded by his family and his beloved dogs. Survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Alice (Wanamaker) Flower; a son, Alan Flower (Jo-Ann) of Nauwigewauk, their children, Ian and Jill Flower both of Saint John; a daughter, Judy Kane (Bob) of Rothesay, their children, Angela (Colin) of Halifax, Heather (Glenn) of London, ON and Cynthia of Fredericton; a daughter, Kaye Andrews (Terry) of Fredericton, their children, Derek and David both of Fredericton; a special great granddaughter, Clare; a cousin, Cora Carle; many nieces and nephews and his life long friend, Alton Hoyt. In addition to his parents, Douglas was predeceased by two brothers; Perley and Garnet. Resting at the Minto Funeral Home (327-3490) with visiting on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4pm. Funeral Service will be held 11:00AM, Monday, August 3rd, 2009 from the United Baptist Church of Minto with Rev. Phil Styles officiating. Interment will take place in the United Baptist Cemetery. For those who wish donations made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or the United Baptist Church of Minto would be appreciated by the family. www.mintofh.com
