It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Donald ‘Donnie’ Collier, 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late George and Annie (MacPhee) Collier.
Donnie was employed for 25 years with the Woolco department store in Sydney River until his retirement. An Elder and faithful member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, he was a member of the church choir and charter member of the Mens Club, and was also a former scout leader. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Thelma (Riggs) Collier; one son, Ken (Thea) Collier, North Sydney; two daughters, Sandra (Roger) Gallant, Porters Lake, Judy (David) Horne, Dartmouth; his four grandchildren, Christopher (Danielle), Jeffrey, Theresa, Chantel; three great-grandchildren, Chantal, Brendan, Bentley; and one sister, Sheila (Charlie) Bashow, Timberlea.
Visitation for Donnie will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service to be held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
