BETTY VANDENBERG
VANDENBERG, BETTY - Betty (Mary Elizabeth) Vandenberg (nee Dykeman) passed away in Halifax on November 29, 2009. Betty was a gracious and loving person whose humour and warmth drew people to her and whose strength and spirit made life so much fun. Betty was born on July 6, 1927 in Saint John, NB to the late Alice (nee O'Malley) and Ronald Dykeman. She grew up and worked in Saint John and later moved to Montreal where she met and married Arie Willam Vandenberg, who predeceased her. They shared a fantastic and wonderful 39 years together. Betty is survived by her three daughters, Annelie, Carla and Elizabeth, all of Halifax, who have the utmost respect and love for their mom. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Margeson (Riverview, NB), brothers David (Oakville, ON), and Bob (Saint John, NB), numerous nieces, nephews and other family members in Canada and overseas. She was predeceased by brothers Bill, Ron and Earle. Several close and long-time friends were also an important part of her life. Betty's love of music led her to church choirs in Montreal, Saint John and Halifax, musical groups, the Dal Choral, Women for Music and was a long time supporter of local symphonies. Betty was fortunate to be able to enjoy many trips and adventures throughout her life, ranging from an ocean voyage to Europe in her twenties with her good friend Madeline to swimming with the dolphins in Cuba in her seventies. A special thank you to the staff of the Green Street Berkeley and unit 7.3 of the Halifax Infirmary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Symphony or Bedford United Church. A service will be held at the Bedford United Church on Thursday, December 3rd at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow in the church hall. Rev. David Hartt will be attending.
