PATRICIA ANN SMITH

SMITH, PATRICIA ANN - Patricia Ann Smith passed away peacefully at Laurier House in Edmonton, Alberta on December 11, 2009, after a long battle with MS and more recently with breast cancer. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on January 23, 1947, she attended St. Vincent's High School before continuing her education at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She received her Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of British Columbia. Pat taught in Greenwood, Nova Scotia and in Devon, Alberta until her illness forced her to retire at age 50. Pat was the daughter of Esther Smith and the late William (Bill) Smith of Saint John New Brunswick. Besides her mother, Pat is survived by her companion Ron Palmer of Edmonton Alberta, sister Joyce Wilkes, brother-in-law Peter Wilkes, and niece Robyn Wilkes, all of Saint John, nephew David Wilkes of Airdrie, Alberta, several cousins, aunts and uncles. Pat was predeceased by her father in 1993 and her brother Wayne Morris Smith who died at age 8 months. Pat's love of teaching and of her students was apparent to all who knew her. Her strength and determination is an inspiration to all whose lives she touched. Many thanks to the wonderful staff of Laurier House, who became like a family to her. Their love and support was truly a blessing. Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MS Society, Edmonton SPCA, or to the David Vernon Memorial/Scholarship Fund c/o Acadia University Development Office, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
