Born in Sydney, Feb. 14, 1911, he was the son of the late John C. and Mary (MacLeod) MacDonald.
Bernie’s father was from Arisaig, Antigonish County, while his mother was from French Road, Mira.
Bernie spent most of his working life at the steel plant, retiring in 1972. He travelled the world both alone with his sister Mary Ellen. He loved world affairs, politics, the Scottish culture, travel, all things scientific, gardening, reading, singing and talking about his days at the steel plant, although not necessarily in that order.
He was a devoted member of St. Anthony Daniel parish, Sydney.
Bernie was unmarrried and was the last surviving member of his family.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Virginia MacDonald, Sydney; his five nephews, Robert MacDonald (Heather), Bedford, N.S., Ian MacDonald (Aggie), Sydney, Greg MacDonald (Sharon), Sydney, Michael MacDonald, Dartmouth, and Gerald MacDonald (Melissa), Sydney; two grandnieces, Heather and Sheilah MacDonald; and four grandnephews, Stephen and Justin MacDonald, Ian MacDonald and Jacob MacDonald.
Bernie was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ellen in 1994, and his brother, Robert ‘Bob’ in 2000.
There will be no visitation for the late Bernard MacDonald. A Mass of Resurrection and a celebration of Bernie’s life will take place Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Alexandra Street, Sydney, with Fr. Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
