Dr. Olga B. Bishop

Dr. Olga B. Bishop LONDON, ON - Dr. Olga B. Bishop, 91, of London, formerly of Toronto, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2002, peacefully at McCormick Home. Predeceased by her parents Thomas and Minnie Bishop, both late of New Brunswick and her brother Thomas, late of London. Fondly remembered by her niece Bernice Foulds of Hamilton, and her nephews Thomas Cochrane of Kelowna, B.C. and Brian Bishop of Goderich. Dr. Olga Bishop graduated from Mt. Allison Ladies College and received the Birks Gold Metal for outstanding Academic Achievement. While attending Mt. Allison University, she earned her B.A and M.A. She went on to attain a B.Pub.Admin. from Carleton University as well as an A.M.L.S. and PhD. in Library Science from the University of Michigan, positioning her as the first woman in Canada to hold such credentials. Additional to these, she received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Mount Allison in 1971, and received the Alumni Recognition Award for International Leadership in the Library Profession in 1985 from the University of Michigan. In 1953, Olga accepted the position of Librarian of the University Western Ontario Medical School, resigning in 1965 to accept a professorship at the University of Toronto. The extent of these academic and professional accomplishments is made more apparent by an early childhood battle with tuberculosis that delayed her entry into formal education until the age of 14. Despite such adversity early in life, Olga became a pioneer for women in the pursuit of higher education and professional acceptance. Throughout her life, Olga remained an active member of the Metropolitan United Church in London, Ontario. A private funeral service was conducted by Rev. Farquhar MacKinnon at the James A. Harris Funeral Home. Cremation with interment in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Lung Association or charity of your choice would be gratefully acknowledged.
