Christina ‘Tena’ MacQuarrie, 427 Atlantic Street, Sydney, died at home on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, after a short illness.
Christina was the daughter of the late R.H. MacLean and Maryena (MacNeil) MacLean of New Waterford.
A graduate of the Provincial Teachers College, Truro, she taught classes at Mt. Carmel School in New Waterford for five years before moving to Sydney where she was employed in administration at CJCB Radio and TV (ATV) for 38 years.
Christina was an active volunteer in several community organizations, receiving awards from the S.P.C.A., Laubach Literacy of Canada and Nova Scotia (Each One Teach One), Volunteer Resource Centre, C.B.R.M. and the United Way. She was a past chairperson for the local Laubach Council and provincial training officer for trainers in the L.L.C. method of teaching adults to read and write. She was a past board member of New Dawn Enterprises and N.S. Literacy Advisory Council.
Christina is survived by sisters, Phemie MacLean and Dorothy Dumont, in addition to several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by brothers, Frank and Angus and sister, Catherine Currie.
At her request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to the S.P.C.A., C.B. Literacy Network, C.B. Cancer Society or the Volunteer Resource Centre.
