It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Franklyn Balcom, 91, of Westmount. Frank passed away peacefully, at home, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, with his son, John by his side.
Born in Paradise, Annapolis County, he was the son of the late Harry and Emily (Ernst) Balcom.
A veteran of the Second World War, Frank served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was a former member of the RCMP. In 1950, he moved to Cape Breton with his family as field manager of the Fuller Brush Company. Frank later worked as a sales representative for Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan and Heritage Scholarship Foundation.
He was an avid hunter and salmon fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and loved his raspberry patch.
Frank was a former member of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, Westmount, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126 and a 50 year member of the East Gate Lodge # 127.
Surviving are his four children, Joan Gillis, Halifax, Ann (Dave) Benedict, Sydney Forks, John, Westmount and Rick (Rena), Shelburne; grandchildren, Paul, John D. (Michelle), Kent (Robyn), Cheryl, Ryan and Brendan; great-grandchildren, Hayley, Archie, Royce, Hana and Austin. He is also survived by his brother, Edward (Hattie) Balcom of Paradise.
Frank was predeceased by his wife, Betty (October 2008); brothers, Eugene, Russ, Aub, Don, Norm and Al; granddaughter, Nancy Nicole; son-in-law, Danny Gillis.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6:45 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Monday, Feb. 23 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
