J. Frank Lenihan
J. Frank Lenihan BATHURST, NB - J. Frank Lenihan, 82, of Hennessy St., Bathurst, died Thursday, April 23, 2003 at the Bathurst Regional Hospital. Born November 23, 1920, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Doherty) Lenihan. He was pre-deceased by his wife, the former Geraldine "Gerry" O'Reilly in 2002. He is survived by two sons, Terry Lenihan (Margaret) of Bathurst,Paul Lenihan of Moncton; one daughter, Lynne Lenihan of Toronto; six grandchildren, Sarah, Daphne, Brian Carr, Ian, Ted and Pat; two brothers, Walter Lenihan (Connie) of Montreal, Que., William Le nihan (Florence) of Dartmouth, NS; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice and Mary; a brother, Bob. After High School he took courses at Modern Business College and then served in World War II from 1941 to 1945 with the RCAF in Canada, Europe and North Africa, and was a commissioned officer of his plane and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for courage and leadership under extreme conditions and he and his crew survived five separate crash landings and all survived the war. Frank subsequently returned to Moncton and worked with the Provincial Bank of Canada and married Geraldine in 1945. He subsequently embarked on his career as a chartered accountant with the firm of Hudson and McMackin in Saint John. The Lenihan family arrived in Bathurst in 1955 and Frank was a senior partner with the firm and opened the Bathurst office, which served all of Northern NB. After a 42 years career he retired from the firm which by then was known as KPMG. Frank was very involved and active member of the community and was a member of the Rotary Club in excess of 25 years and held most executive positions including president. He was also a Town Councilor and later a member of the first council of the newly incorporated City of Bathurst, and was on the Board of Directors of a number of Companies and also on the Board of Governors of St. Thomas University for many years. He was an involved member of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18, Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst, the RCAF Association, the Group committee for Holy Family Scouts, and was a fourth degree of the Msgr. Weaton Assembly, Council 1935, Knights of Columbus, as well as an active member of the Gowan Brae Golf and Country Club, the Bathurst Curling Club. Frank had been honored over the years for his contributions both to business and civic affairs. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from St. Thomas University, and many recognitions from Rotary, Knights of Columbus, the Royal Canadian Legion and the City of Bathurst. Frank Lenihan lived a distinguished and full life and was proud of our community and served it well. The body is resting at Elhatton's Funeral Home, Bathurst, with visitation on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and Saturday noon until time of funeral. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. from Holy Family Church, St. Peter Ave., Bathurst. Burial will be in the parish cemetery later in the spring.
