Most Rev. Donat Chiasson ROGERSVILLE, NB - Most Reverend Donat Chiasson, 73 years, of Rogersville, Archbishop Emeritus of Moncton, passed away accidentally in Collette, NB on Wednesday October 8, 2003. Born January 2, 1930 in Paquetville, he was the son of the late Louis, and Anna (Godin) Chiasson. After his primary schooling, he attended Saint Joseph's University, Memramcook, from 1945 until 1952. He entered Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, and was ordained priest May 6, 1956. He was curate at Caraquet from 1956 until 1958, at Lameque from 1958 until 1959, then undertook furthur studies in Theology and Catechetics in Rome, and in Lumen Vitae in Belgium. Back in Canada, he was appointed curate at Grande-Anse from 1961 to 1963, then appointed a teaching post at Bathurst College from 1963 until 1965. In 1965, he was appointed Pastoral Director for the Diocese of Bathurst, while retaining the posts of Chaplain to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament (1965-1967), curate at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bathurst (1967-1970), and co-ordinator for the catechetical program in the diocese from 1961 until 1970. In 1970, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Bathurst, and pastor in Petit-Rocher parish. On June 1, 1972, Most Reverend Donat Chiasson was ordained third Archbishop of Moncton until his retirement in September of 1995. He is survived by three brothers: Father Elphège of Pokemouche, Victor (late Alphonsine) of Tracadie-Sheila, Gilles (Diane) of Ottawa, a sister-inlaw Maria Chiasson (late Ernest) of Moncton, several nieces, and nephews from Moncton, and Montréal. A sister Thérèse Paienent (late Léo) predeceased him. Remains resting Saturday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Frenette Funeral Home, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900), Sunday from 2 - 9 PM at Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, St-George Street, Moncton from where the funeral mass will be held Monday October 13, 2003 at 11 AM. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe. Radio-Canada FM, 88.5 will broadcast the funeral beginning at 10:45 a.m. Saturday to benefit those faithful who are unable to attend. www.frenettefuneralhome.com
