We regret to announce the passing of Ernest Robert Simm, 93, on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Harbour View Hospital, Veterans Wing.
Born in Florence on March 22, 1916, he was the son of the late Ernest and Clara (Hale) Simm.
Ernie graduated from Sydney Mines High School in 1937. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the RCAF from 1942-1945.
After the war, he worked with Devco at the Florence Colliery No. 3, Princess Colliery No. 1 and at the V.J. Plant until his retirement. He was a member of the Orangemen’s Association, on the Board of Stewards at Wilson United Church and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83 in Florence.
Ernie was an avid gardener and golfer and enjoyed spending time at his cottage in New Campbellton.
Ernie is survived by his special friend, Christine Jessome; daughters, Gail Simm, London Ont., Judith (Tom) McNeil, Georges River; son, Robert (Bernadette) Simm, Sydney Mines; grandchildren, Lisa and Laura Winstanley, Mark Marinelli, Jane Panwar, Jason Marinelli Simm, Brad and Michael MacNeil; great-grandchildren, Drake, Kristen, Sydney, Oliver and Nathaniel; brother, James Simm (Helene Walker); sister, Rosina Gallop and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Louise (MacLeod) Simm, daughter-in-law, Holly (MacDougall) Simm, brother, Darwin and sisters-in-law, Louise and Gale.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence, with Norma Mills, DLM, officiating. Reception will follow the service in the Florence legion.
