MacKenzie, Dorothy Ruth

Truro, NS. Dorothy Ruth (Hayward) MacKenzie passed away Thursday March 18, 2010 at the age of 89 years in the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, NS with her family by her side. Dorothy was born during a winter blizzard on Feb.21, 1921 in the family home; located on Faulkland St., Pictou to her parents Hilson Elbert and Emily (McKean) Hayward. She grew up in Pictou, NS and graduated from Pictou Academy in 1939. She worked for a number of years at Jack MacKinnon’s Shoe Store. It was during this period that she met her future husband, Neil Harris MacKenzie. They were married on April 14, 1943 and raised their family in Pictou, where Dorothy remained for 60 years until Neil’s sudden passing in June 1981. She then moved to Truro where she remained in her own home for the next 27 years until becoming a resident of the Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow in July 2008. Dorothy was very active in the United Church, both as a member of Pictou United and later a member of St. David’s United, Bible Hill. She was a member of the UCW, a CGIT leader, Past Noble Grand of Princess Rebekah Lodge, Pictou and associate member of Princess Rebekah Lodge, Truro. She was also active in a number of church-related committees. Dorothy is survived by her son George (Carol) MacKenzie, Truro; son in law Bert (Joyce) Kelderman, Bayview; sister in law Ellen Hayward, Pictou; brother in law David Fleming, Wasaga Beach, Ontario; grandchildren, Beth MacKenzie, Port Williams; Glen (Michelle) MacKenzie, Valley; Kenneth (Sheryl) MacKenzie, Crowes Mills; Jimmie (Amy) Williams, Pictou; Allan (Jodi) Williams, Rustico, PEI; Emily (John) Charlton, Little Egypt, Pictou Co.; Jane (Craig) Oikle, Scotsburn; Marie (Mike) Kelderman, St. John’s, Nfld and twelve great grandchildren.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Hilson & Emily Hayward; husband, Neil, daughters, Heather and Joan; sister Jean (Fleming); brother Jack and son-in-law, Jim (Williams). Dorothy who was also known as “Mimmie” or “Grammie” was an avid reader and had a passion for gardening, flowers, history and fulfilled her desire to travel during her later years; visiting many countries abroad. Cremation has taken place. At Dorothy’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A family interment service will be held at a later date at Haliburton Cemetery, Pictou, NS. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to The Glen Haven Manor, 739 East River Road, New Glasgow, NS, B2H 5E9, The Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend sincere and heartfelt thanks to the staff of 2nd Floor South, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, for the exceptional care and compassion given to Dorothy during her stay. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou.
