Richard Miles Steele died March 14, 2010. Born in Rothesay, New Brunswick on September 22, 1915. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1939 and was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Following retirement from a full time career in the Canadian Navy in 1970, he had a second career as an internationally renowned and respected rhododendron breeder, teacher and plantsman. He received many distinguished awards for his work. In December, 2004 he was inducted as a member to the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to horticulture in Canada. A friend and mentor to both amateur and expert alike, his passion and boundless enthusiasm inspired thousands in Canada and the U.S.A. His belief was that the beauty and serenity of plants and gardens have the power to transform lives and bring peace and harmony to the world. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (McDonald) Steele, his daughters, Sally and Diana, daughter-in-law Eileen (Langille) Steele, grandchildren, David Steele and Carolyn (Hennessey) Steele and Heather (Steele) Campbell and John Campbell, Tanya Hatherley, Simon Hatherley, and 5 great grand-children, his brothers John, George and Don Steele and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Arthur Steele, his brothers Bill, Joe and Tom Steele and his sister Betty (Steele) Mackay.
A celebration of his life will take place on Monday, March 22 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia at the Royal Canadian Legion, 78 Churchill Street between 1:30 and 4:00 pm. His ashes will be buried with a graveside service in Kingston, New Brunswick, in June when the rhododendrons are blooming. In lieu of flowers, either a donation to a charity of your choice or plant a tree would be appreciated .
