Alice Josephine Peters

84, Mira Road Alice Josephine Peters, 84, of Mira Road, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Joseph I. MacGillivary and Gertrude (Jackson) MacGillivary of Gabarus. Alice's mother was one of the Pier 21 children who immigrated to Canada from Birmingham, England. Alice was a member of the former St. John's Anglican Ladies Guild, Club 55 and enjoyed playing 45s wherever there was a game. She attended and enjoyed the VON day program for seniors. Surviving are her four daughters, Anne Stone (Harvey) and Brenda Carson (Jerry), Mira Road, Judy MacLellan (Pat), East Bay, and Alison Locke (Glenn), Mira Road; five sons, Fred (Evelyn), Tom (Debbie), Gordon (Phyllis), George (Sheila), all of Mira Road, and Terry (Debbie), Hillside Road. Alice is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gertrude 'Girlie' MacKenzie and Florence 'Sis' Crooks, Halifax; only cousin, Frances Pushie, Sydney; family friend, Maurice MacNeil and everyone who considered her a "second mother." Alice was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. 'Barney,' sisters, Erna Ferguson and Adelaide Burns, brothers, Hardy and Lloyd. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Alice will be remembered for her unconditional acceptance of everyone and her house was "home" to many. Her favourite saying was "We are only going this way once." Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Church of Christ the King, Trinity Avenue, Monday, 3 p.m., with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Following the service, a meal and fellowship will be held at the Mira Road fire hall. Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ the King Memorial Fund, the VON Day Program for Seniors or a charity of one's choice.
