Robert Charles Rutledge (C.D.)

Passed away suddenly at his home on Jan. 6, 2009, at the age of 82. Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Pearl Rutledge, also his sister, Margaret 'Peggy' Betuik. Born and raised in Sydney, Cape Breton, N.S. Bob served proudly in the Armed Forces from April 1945 to September 1945. Bob returned to Sydney and was later employed at the Sydney steel plant. Bob rejoined the Canadian Forces in 1953 and served with the RCEME. Also served with NATO and the UN in Egypt and Germany. Bob retired from the Forces in 1977 and moved his family to British Columbia, where Bob was employed at Endako Mines as a machinist. In 1991, Bob and Kay moved to Penticton where they have resided since. Bob enjoyed his leisure hours curling and playing crib. Bob was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 40, Penticton. He also treasured time with his family and friends. Bob will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years (in April), Catherine 'Kay' (MacCormack). His sons, Charles, Vanderhoof, B.C., Robert 'Rob' (Janice), Fraser Lake, B.C.; grandson, Brent (Ashley), Ashcroft, B.C.; brothers, Paul (Peggy), New Waterford, Lewis (Mary), Terrace, B.C.; three nieces, Judy Thomas (Danny), Fort McMurray, Paula Schust (Carl), Halifax, and Lillian Rutledge, Terrace, B.C.; four nephews, Fred Rutledge, Edson, Alta., Don Rutledge, Terrace, B.C., Robert Betuik, Sydney, and Paul Betuik, Halifax. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Alice Marsh, Mill Creek, Frances MacCormack, Halifax, Georgina MacCormack, George's River; brothers-in-law, Dan MacCormack (Colleen), Stoney Creek, Ont., and John Betuik, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by sisters-in-law, Mary Leon, Edith Ann MacDonald, Ann Keeping, brothers-in-law, Angus MacCormack and Albert MacCormack. A private family viewing took place Jan. 8, 2009. His ashes will be returned to Cape Breton this summer. If friends so desire, donations in Bob's memory may be made to the B.C. Lung Association. "A father is strong in his example.
