Shirley Evangeline Gracie

Jan. 22, 1927-Jan. 27, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Shirley Gracie, Sydney Mines, who passed away peacefully at her home, Jan. 27, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Oswald and Annie (Ash) Vickers. In her earlier years, Shirley was a world traveller and loved time spent in her garden. People will remember her passion for bingo and her devotion to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines. Shirley will be dearly missed by her companion of 40 years, Charlie Dawe; and her children, Glenn (Emily), Keith (Adele), Donna (Brian), Cameron (Linda) and Terry (Hughena). Shirley is also survived by a sister, Willena (Raymond) McManus, Montreal. Nanny Gracie will be fondly remembered and missed by her 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters, Alice, Pearl, Margaret, Ellen and Priscilla, brothers, Brad, Kenny, Sidney and Lenny and also by a granddaughter, Lori. The family wishes to express special appreciation to close family friends who visited with her at home and made her last days special. Also special thanks for the wonderful care provided in her last days by home care, VON and palliative care. We would like to acknowledge the caregivers for their warm and compassionate services, which made life so much more comfortable for her. Visitation for Shirley will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Carmen United Church with Pearl Miller officiating.
