It is with deep regret we announce the sudden passing of Douglas Patrick Hopkins, 42, on April 2, 2009, in Calgary, Alta.
Born in Sydney Mines, Doug was the son of Peter and Patricia (MacKinnon) Hopkins of Sydney Mines. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines.
Doug took great joy in helping others as demonstrated in his work as personal care worker with Cape Breton County Homemakers for several years. Doug was highly regarded and will be greatly missed by all of his clients.
Doug was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending much of his free time fishing.
Doug’s greatest love was his family, and they will miss him dearly.
Doug is survived by his parents, Peter and Patricia Hopkins, Sydney Mines; wife, Frances (Bushnik), Sydney; daughter, Catherine, Sydney and son Jeffery, Gillis Lake. He is also survived by sisters, Wanda (Lewis) MacNeil, Millville, Arlene (James) Smith, Fort McMurray and Carol (Ferrell) Hopkins, North Sydney and brothers, Wayne (Lisa), Sydney Mines, Bruce, Calgary, Brent, Halifax, and Darren (Debbie), Halifax.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Doug Hopkins will be in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial mass celebrating Doug’s life will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. A funeral liturgy will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. A reception will follow in the Immaculate Conception hospitality room.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
