Roddie was serenaded to heaven surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Friday, April 2, 2010 at the age of 74.
He was the beloved husband of Mary Letha (nee MacDonald) for 47 years and cherished father to Anthony of Masset, BC, Debbie Murphy (Greg) of Sydney Mines, Rick (Kathryn) of Fredericton NB, Christopher (Carole Ann) of Innisfail AB, Letha (John Mason), Sydney Mines and Adam (Sonja) of Terrace BC. He was the son of the late John and Catherine (MacMullin) Shaw, dear brother of Jeanette (Shaw) Gerrow, beloved Poppa to Erin and Lauren Murphy, Rory and Libby Shaw, Emily, Ryan and Jeremy Shaw, Harmony and Falena Smallboy, Baily Shaw, Oscar and Karlee Shaw, dear brother-in-law to Charles MacDonald (Myrt) of Dunvegan NS, Paul Allister MacDonald (Audrey) of Truro, Dorothy (MacDonald) Capasse of Great Barrington MA, Stella MacDonald of St. Catharine's ON and Jim Crawford, Sydney Mines and treasured uncle to numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother John; his sister Anna (Shaw) Woodfine; his granddaughter Meaghan Murphy; his brothers-in-law Jerry and Mike MacDonald and his sisters-in-law Charlotte (MacDonald) Crawford and Dee (Crowe) Shaw. He was also predeceased by his loving, faithful and furry friend Piper.
Roddie was the well-liked and highly-respected manager of Princes Credit Union for 25 years. Prior to that he was employed by the former Town of Sydney Mines and the Department of National Defence. A life-long resident of Sydney Mines, Roddie made many contributions to his community as a founding member of Kinsmen/K40 Clubs. He was a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Past President of Seaview Golf Club and was the Town Crier. He served on several Boards of Directors, most currently the Kinsmen Daycare and Miners Memorial Manor.
Roddie loved to fish, "hunt", golf, bowl and dance. He also enjoyed a good game of cards or pool and had a soft spot in his heart for his little dog Abbie. Roddie had a good sense of humour, evidenced by his long time devotion to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, April 5, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 49 Convent St., Sydney Mines with Father Thomas John officiating. Following the Mass a celebration of life reception will be held in the Centennial Room.
The family would like to thank everyone for their loving thoughts and prayers during Roddie's illness and the compassionate care provided by all of the medical staff at the CBRH, ICU. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Lung Association would be appreciated.
