Lloyd ‘Jack’ Leslie, born June 12, 1931, in Glace Bay, N.S., passed away on May 2, 2009, in Annapolis Royal, N.S.
Early in his life, as a teenager, he worked on the steam trains at the Glace Bay railyard, a job he reminisced about frequently, later in life. For over 20 years he was a firefighter in the Glace Bay Fire Department and was chief of the department for several years in the early 1970s, before moving his family to British Columbia, where he purchased an apple orchard in the Okanagan Valley. After operating this small orchard for a time, the call of the province he loved drew him back to Nova Scotia, where he settled with his family in the Upper Clements area of the Annapolis Valley. Here, he was a businessman and woodworker, who was known for his exquisite cabinetry and oak clocks. Forever inventive, he was always formulating new ideas. He was also a fine carpenter having built, almost single-handedly, three of his own family’s dwellings during his life. This included his last home in Upper Clements, which became his true and lasting home.
Music was very important in his life, and it was a rare visit indeed when Bach or Mozart wasn’t playing in the background. He also had an abiding love of all things natural, especially the songbirds at his feeders. He was a talented, gentle man who loved his family above all else.
Lloyd ‘Jack’ Leslie is survived by his wife, Jean Leslie of Upper Clements; his children, Daniel, Grand River, N.S., Beverly and Scott, Annapolis Royal; his granddaughter, Lindsay, Halifax; his grandsons, Jacob, Annapolis Royal, and Scott and Adam, Grand River, N.S., and his great-grandson, Luke, Halifax, as well as the rest of his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lona Leslie (1990) and his daughter, Constance Leslie (2006).
A visitation was held at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home in Annapolis Royal, Monday, May 4 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., today (Tuesday), May 5 at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home in Annapolis Royal.
