Dorothy "Dot" Margaret Oliver (Nee Gale)

It is with broken hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Dorothy "Dot" Oliver, 82, of New Waterford who passed away at home on Thursday, July 3, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Millville, NL, she was the daughter of the late Afra and Catherine (Gillis) Gale. Dorothy was a member of St. Leonard Parish, Mount Carmel Church and a member of the New Waterford Pensioners' Club where she enjoyed a good game of cards with her friends. She also enjoyed a good dance. A faith-filled woman, Dot gave of herself unceasingly for family and friends. She was a wonderful mother and an exceptional grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are daughters Rita (Rick) Hanes, Gail (Wayne) Power, both of New Waterford, Cathy (Dale) Caume, River Ryan; sons Rev. James, Sydney, Raymond (Gertrude), Halifax, Gordon (Marlene), Charles (Cheryl), both of New Waterford; brother Robert (Maybelle), Stephenville, NL; sisters Rita Doyle, Stephenville, NL, Gertrude Gillis, Codroy, NL; grandchildren Joey, Mark, Jeffrey, Janet, Raymond, Scott, Greg, Chris, Aimee, Tony, Christa, Lindsay, Melissa, Josh, Haley, Joseph and Madison; great-grandchildren Emiley and Neely Rae; aunts, Sister Gertrude Caroline Gillis, Wellesley, Mass., Margaret "Maggie" Doyle, Stephenville, NL. and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, daughter Diane Bates, two children in infancy, and three brothers Johnny, Peter, and Gordon. Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday,July 7, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Dorothy's son, Rev. James W. Oliver, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Luncheon to follow at St. Agnes Parish Hall. All are welcome. Donations in her memory may be made to the Parish of St. Leonard, Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, or a charity of one's choice. A special word of thanks to Palliative Care and Victorian Order of Nurses for their great care and concern for mom.
