Eleanor passed away peacefully on Friday, April 2, 2010, at Sherbrooke Community Centre where she had resided for several years. Eleanor was born on April 11, 1925, to Sheldon and Ella Orr of Pennant, SK. Eleanor was raised on the family farm northeast of Pennant attending Ohioville School. Eleanor was predeceased by Melvin, her husband of 54 years; her parents, her brother Bennett Orr; her brother-in-law George Ashby; and niece Ruth. She is lovingly survived by her son Hal (Michelle), their children Leah (John) Butt, Iain (Michaela LaBlanc) and Eve; her daughter Judith (Irwin) Ewen, their children Elizabeth and Paul; sister Aileen Ashby, brother Don (Joyce) Orr; sister-in-law Evelyn Orr; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor took her nursing training at Yorkton General Hospital, graduating in 1947. She worked in surgery at Yorkton General Hospital before moving to Vancouver to work in obstetrics at St. Paul's Hospital. She married Melvin in 1951 in Vancouver, returning to Pennant with him to start farming and raising their family. Eleanor was active in the community being a member of the Farm Women's Club, UCW, Past Matron of the Pennant Eastern Star, also involved with the church Sunday School and choir. She loved gardening, especially growing flowers, sewing, canning and baking. She and Melvin retired from farming, but remained in Pennant for several years before moving to Saskatoon in 2000 to be closer to the children and grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sherbrooke Community Centre (401 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK) with Reverend Ray Purdie officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Donations in Eleanor's memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
