It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of Robert 'Bob' Mullins, age 62, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at his home.
Born in Glace Bay, Bob was the son of the late Pius and Miriam (Littler) Mullins. Bob was a well known hockey player, beginning with minor hockey in Glace Bay. When he was sixteen, he was scouted by Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadians. He was picked up by the Detroit team while attending one of their training camps. He went on to play junior hockey in Flin Flon, Manitoba, and continued with Johnstown, Penn., Jacksonville, Florida and Greensboro, North Carolina. He later went on to play varsity hockey for 4 years at St. Mary's University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. He was employed for many years as Recreation Director for the Town of North Sydney, and later, the Recreation Department with Cape Breton Regional Municipality until his retirement. In his retirement years, Bob developed a great passion for playing golf and he and his wife Barb enjoyed their trips to Florida together.
He is survived by his loving wife Barbara (Budge) Mullins, his two sons, Chris (Tanya), Halifax, Scott (Tina), Edmonton and his two grandchildren, Connor and Joshua; his sisters, Bessie Gerrard, Hamilton, Mildred (Stan) Matthews, Port Aux Basques, Miriam (Mike) Miclon, California; his three brothers, Cecil (Mary) Mullins, Paul (Gloria) Mullins and Art (Carol) Mullins, all of Glace Bay, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by three brothers, Pius 'Ducky', John and Karl in infancy and one sister, Eva Laura in infancy; his mother and father-in-law Bill and Mae Budge; brother-in-law Walter Gerrard and sister-in-law Shelley (Ken) MacDougall.
Visitation for Bob will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service to be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating, and reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
