Capt. William Donald Leighton, 72, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Dartmouth General Hospital on April 14, 2010.
Originally from Wick, Scotland, he was a son of the late Leonard and Elizabeth (Grant) Leighton.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret (Legge) and son, Neil.
He is survived by his wife, Mora (Richaur); sons, Kevin (Jacqueline) Renfrew, Pa., Gary Ferguson, currently stationed in Afghanistan, Kevin Ferguson, Ottawa, Ont; a daughter, Karen (Normand) Vincent, Dartmouth; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson; sister, Jean (Raymond) Cameron, Inverness, Scotland.
Donald was a member of the British Merchant Marines for 20 years and was captain of the St. Ninian; port captain with Dart Container Line in Halifax, district general manager with CN/Canadian Maritime at the Port of Montreal. He retired in 1999 and became a Canadian citizen and returned to Cape Breton and subsequently moved to Dartmouth.
Cremation has taken place and funeral services will be held in Scotland in July 2010.
