Thelma Olga Libbey-Gallant of Old Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010.
Born on Sept. 3, 1928, in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Neil Anthony MacNeil and Bridget Mae Nolan.
Thelma was educated in Glace Bay and attended Brookside Elementary School and St. Anne's High School, graduating in 1947. Following graduation, she entered St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing and upon graduating in 1950 with her RN, was appointed to the hospital nursing staff.
In 1956, she moved to Hollywood, Calif. to work at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. In 1961, she married Frank Libbey and moved to San Dimas, Calif. After raising a family, she returned to work in 1975 for The Bonita Unified School District as a school nurse at Lone Hill Intermediate School and San Dimas High School. In 1980, she became a dialysis nurse at the Glendora Artificial Kidney Foundation.
Returning to Cape Breton in 1985, Thelma resided in Sydney where she worked as a nurse at the Braemore Home, before retiring in 1993.
She is survived by her husband, Basil Gallant; daughter, Deborah Libbey, Battle Ground, Wash.; son, Neil Libbey, Sydney; stepson, Gregg Gallant, Ellington, Conn.; grandson, Colin and step-grandson, William.
Thelma was predeceased by her first husband, Frank Libbey in 1999, brothers, Roderick and Joseph, and sisters, Mary 'Tillie' and Marie Elena 'Penny'.
Funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with Fr. William Rankin officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
