1920 - 2010 - Eloi Martin, 89, of Dieppe, NB, passed away on Thursday, May 6th 2010, at his residence. He left peacefully, surrounded by his close family, after a long illness. Born in Rogersville, NB, Eloi was the son of the late Pacifique and the late Josephine (née: Babineau) Martin. He worked for the Province of NB, Department of Transportation, then at the Moncton Airport until his retirement as foreman in 1995. Eloi was a WW II veteran, having served with the army 11th Field Ambulance unit; he shared with dignity his memories of his participation in the liberation of Europe. A great traveler, Eloi was proud of his Acadian roots and helped organize the Martin family reunion during the first World Acadian Congress in 1994. He was a member and active volunteer of the Club d'Age d'Or de Dieppe and a Notre-Dame-de-Lorette parishioner. Eloi is survived by his wife, Eva (née: Barrieau); three daughters: Ginette (Alejandro) Martin of Gatineau, Monique (Donald) LeBlanc of Dieppe and Paulette (Francis) Arsenault of Venise-en-Québec; four sons: Jean (Gisèle), and Yvon (Gilberte) of Grande-Digue, Ronald (Carmen) of Barachois and Claude (Annette) of Dieppe; one sister, Lucie Martin of Dieppe; 22 grandchildren: Richard, Yves (Ann), Michel, Denis (Lizeth), Remi, Serge, Jœl, Rejean, Karine, Christine (David), François, Eric, Michele, Manuel, Martin, Gabrielle, Pierre (Stéphanie), Ghislain, Stéphane (Kate), André, Daniel et Charles, one great grandson, Mathias, and many nieces and nephews. The news of three new great grandchildren "on the way" was a source of great joy during his last months. He was pre-deceased by one daughter, Murielle in 1954 and also by four brothers: Emile, Albert, Antoine and Marcel.
Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, NB (857-1901) on Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm and also on Saturday from 8: 30 am until time of departure. Funeral mass will be celebrated from Saint-Anselme Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, NB on Saturday, May 8th 2010, at 9: 30 am. Interment in Notre-Dame du Calvaire Cemetery, Dieppe, NB. The family is deeply grateful for the loving attention provided by Eloi's caregivers, including the Barrieau family, Florine, Bernette and Jackie, during his last months.
