Jean Marguerite (MacDonald) Kasouf of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, passed on during the morning of June 14, 2010.
Throughout her very long life Marguerite was a woman ahead of her time. She was a mother of four children, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of two. She pursued an education at a time when few women followed that path. She attended Mount Allison University for a year and later graduated from the Halifax Business College.
She worked for Eastern Light & Power and several other local businesses. She also worked in the 'settlement house' system in Toronto. As a young woman she travelled in many parts of the world and was an accomplished skier, skater and pianist, while remaining active in her church.
She lived through the great depression and watched family go overseas to war. She broke social conventions of her day as a Scotch Presbyterian engaging in a "mixed marriage" with a Lebanese Catholic.
Throughout her life Marguerite was active in many charitable groups including the IODE, Missionary Society and Heart & Stroke Foundation.
She loved her children, church, music, garden, dogs and even the occasional cat. She faced many trials during her life with quiet dignity and persevered through a 13 year battle with Alzheimer's.
Marguerite was the daughter of the late Edmund and Jean (Murray) MacDonald and was one of six children. She was the last remaining member of her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Kasouf and one son, Joseph.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda (Dr. Bill Dolan); two sons, Brian and Blair; three grandchildren, Dr. Jeannine (Hugh Higgins), Bill and Carrielyn and two great-grandchildren, Addie and Carter. She is also survived by her special friends and extended family, Pam and Carl Colbourn, as well as Angela, Troy, Carla, Brittany and Lindsey Colbourn in addition to Iris Jessome and Renee King.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kholsmith for his skill and compassion as well as responding paramedics and members of regional police for their kindness on her last day.
Visitation Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 643 Main and Queen, Sydney Mines with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Andrew's Church, Alzheimer's Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation.
