Churchill, Robert Lee "Bob" - 76, of Canning, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at home. A butter box baby of the Ideal Maternity Home, Bob was born in East Chester on January 26, 1934, to Opal (Hendsbee) Smith and was adopted by the late William and Glenna (Strang) Churchill. In his earlier years, Bob attended the Yarmouth Vocational School, studying carpentry and later received a certificate in heating and burner services. He then began a career as a linesman with NB Tel and later MT&T, retiring as manager of real estate and logistics for western Nova Scotia. Bob was a member of the Canning Village Commission for 29 years, serving eight years as chairman and also served two terms with the Nova Scotia Association of Villages. He was involved for many years with the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a past president of the Glooscap Council. Bob was a 40 year member of the Canning United Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons, as a trustee and various other committees. He was chairperson of the Glooscap Summer Festival in the 1970's, served as a volunteer with Northwood and was a member of the Board of Directors of the local V.O.N. and the Fieldwood Heritage Society. He is survived by his wife, Joan Marie (Cole) (Gates) Churchill; two daughters, Sandra (Brian) Churchill-Johnson, Mt. Uniacke and Joanne (Craig MacMaster), Porters Lake; a son, David (Anne), Stewiacke, a step-daughter, Kimberley (Allan) Gates-McRae, San Francisco; a step-son, John (Misa) Gates, Tokyo; three half-sisters, Pearl (Doug) Kirby, Eileen (Albert) Chisholm and Shirley (Geoff) Barrow; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2010 in the Canning United Baptist Church, Reverend Keith Churchill and Reverend John Churchill officiated. A service was also held at 3:30 p.m., in the Brooklyn United Baptist Church, Yarmouth County, followed by the burial in the church cemetery. A reception followed in the community hall. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canning United Baptist Church, the Brooklyn United Baptist Church or the Wade Gates Memorial Fund (Dalhousie University). Special thanks to the Oncology Department, Dr. Merryweather, Tania and those in palliative care and the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses who cared for Bob. Special thanks to grandson, Amos and special friends Blair and Wanda, Paul and Kim, Ruth, Robert and Diane, Linda and all other friends who helped during Bob's illness.
