HONEY - Helen Frances (Potter) Honey of Shaunavon, SK, and formerly of Bracken, SK, was born February 18, 1919, in Stettler, AB, and left us for Heaven June 27, 2010, at the Shaunavon Long Term Care Centre in Shaunavon. William and Blanche Potter were her parents and Helen was the youngest of three children. Upon graduating from Grade 12 in Stettler, she attended Normal School in Edmonton and began teaching at 18 years of age. On August 7, 1942, she enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where she met Raymond Honey, a farmer from Bracken, SK. They were married June 9, 1945, after serving their country until the end of World War II. Their five children are Lyn McInnes; Gregory (Linda), grandchildren Jillian (Vince) Stevenson, Crista (Sandy) Vidal, Shea and Grayson; Glenn (Linda), grandchildren Tara (Jamie) Pegg, Larissa (Manfred) Kugel, Corban (Sarah) and Bethany (Riki) Mahal; Janice (Ken) Billington, grandchildren Daniel (Kendra), Cindy (Tim) Cadieux and Melissa (Stephen) McComish; Christine (Lawrence) Amon, grandchildren Sarah (Michael) Nicholson, Heather (Brendon) Deck, Gregory, Laurie, Logan and Rachel. As of June 27, 2010, Helen was great-grandmother to 17 great grandchildren, with four more arriving soon. June 9, 2010, marked 65 years of marriage for Raymond and Helen. Helen was called back to teaching in 1965 and later worked as a teacher advisor. She retired in 1975. Helen excelled as a primary school teacher, believing that everyone could learn to read and thrived on making that a reality. Many of her older grandchildren remember the 'Dick and Jane' reading series, long after it was used in schools. Music was also an important part of Helen's life and she encouraged her children and grandchildren to learn to play the piano, giving some beginner lessons. Raymond and Helen enjoyed Square and Round Dancing and made several trips to various places with fellow Square Dancers. Helen faced many challenges throughout her lifetime, but God's Hand was upon her, and she had her mother's prayers. As a young mother herself, Helen realized her need for and put her trust in the Saviour. She served faithfully in the Bracken United Church and later became a member of the Shaunavon Alliance Church. She taught Bible Studies and Sunday School and encouraged many in the faith. One of her greatest joys was knowing all her children trusted in Jesus Christ as Saviour. Helen instilled in her children a reverence for God and encouraged them to depend on Him. Helen was predeceased by an infant son Norman (1948); her brother Gilbert Potter (2003); her sister Dorothy McIvor (2003); and son-in-law David McInnes (2004). Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. from Bethel Lutheran Church in Frontier with Pastor Manfred Kurschner officiating. A private family interment service at Bracken Cemetery preceded the funeral service. The eulogy was presented by Shea Honey and Reed Miller accompanied by Magna Norheim provided special music.
