Passed on: June 30th, 2010
Mr. Lyndon Beatty Small passed away peacefully at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on June 30, 2010. Born on April 8, 1913 he was the son of the late Florence (Benson) and Harley Small, Lindy was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ardis (Richardson), brother James (Lillian) Small, and sisters Jessie (Vinton) McLaughlin and Connie (Ernest) Bagley. He is survived by his only daughter, Lorraine Small, of Keswick Ridge, N.B., several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lindy was a veteran of WWII. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 as a mechanic and was involved in the Italian campaign and liberation of Holland. A decorated soldier, he signed on for a second tour of duty with the infantry and remained in Europe until the end of the war. Returning to Grand Manan late in 1945, he worked as a fisherman and as a truck driver for a few years but when the new Grand Manan High School opened in 1948, he began his career as a school bus driver. For 35 years he safely transported children from Seal Cove to GMHS and between bus runs worked part time for Connor's Brothers and Burma Propane. Lindy was an avid baseball fan who, at age 86, was thrilled to see his beloved Boston Red Sox finally win the World Series. He was a member of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Assembly and a proud lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 44. He will always be remembered for his generosity, great sense of humor and love of his family and friends.
