It is with sadness that our family is announcing the death of Edwin Pearson MacKinley, 91, which occurred on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Veteran's Unit, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
Born in Liscomb on October 9, 1918, he was a son of the late Captain Edwin and Nora (Rudolph) MacKinley. Ed spent his working life at sea, having joined the Merchant Navy in 1940. He switched to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941; then returned to the Merchant Navy at Wars end. He was a member of the Seaman's International Union and had been with the Canadian Seaman's Union during his earlier years of service. Ed's ventures took him to many places around the world and included service on vessels such as the Ferries' "Princess Helene" and "Princess of Acadia" out of Saint John; ships of Patterson Steamship Lines, etc. with his last vessel before retirement being the car carrier M.V. Cavallo which was then operating between Halifax and St. John's.
Ed requested that we acknowledge on his behalf his gratitude to the Staff of both the D.V.A. as well as Fishermen's Memorial Hospital for the ongoing kindness and consideration afforded him during his final years of life.
He is survived by his wife of seventy years, the former Eileen Roberts; daughter, Nancy (Gerry) Roach, Beaver Bank; sons, Gary (Carol), Frederiction; John (Lorna), Middle Sackville; Michael (Charlene), Murphy's Cove; Mark, Liscomb; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nephew, Murray (Mary) MacKinley, Guelph, Ontario; niece, Ferne (John) McNeil, Bedford. He was predeceased by brothers, William and Harold, as well as sisters, Minnie Hatcher, Jennie MacKinley and Adelia Hansen.
