1929 - 2010 - Gloria Martell (Painter) of Woodstock, New Brunswick passed away at the Carleton Manor, Woodstock on Monday, July 12, 2010. She was born in Woodstock, NB on November 25, 1929. Daughter of the late Jack and Eleanor (Broughall) Painter.
She attended Broadway School, graduated from Woodstock High School and the
Carleton Co. Vocational School. Gloria served with the Canadian Navy as a nursing assistant after WW II serving members of the Army, Airforce and Navy. Some of her patients were veterans of the Korean war.
Gloria worked many years for a Finance Co. in Woodstock and Saint John. She
was President of the Woodstock Canadian Legion in 1970 and the First female
President in Canada and was made Honorary President of the Woodstock Branch
when she was 64. She was a member of the 89th Battery Canadian Army Reserve, Woodstock, St. Gertrudes RC Church where she was a faithful member and worker.
She was a member of the (CWL) Catholic Womens League and at one time, a Girl
Guide leader. Gloria has had many friends over the years. She is predeceased by her husband M. Edward (Eddie) Martell; two brothers, Jack, killed it action in Germany with the RCAF and Patrick formerly of Saint John. She is survived by a Brother Bevan (Marg) and family of Coe Hill,Ontario; three step children Mary Loomer (Chris), Halifax; Richard (Diane), Middleton, N.S. and Andrew
(Jean), Fredericton and families. Also several nieces and nephews. Donation to the Canadian Legion scholarship fund, would be appreciated.
Visitation on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m at The Culberson Funeral Home with Parish Prayers at 8:00 p.m. with Father Bill Brennan. A Funeral Mass will be held from St. Gertrude's Church at a later date.
