Rev. Dr. John W. Hammond -72, of Lockeport, loving husband of Joan A. (McCrory) Hammond, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2010 at the Victoria General Hospital. Born on July 19, 1938 in Bell Island, NL., he was the eldest son of the late Victor and Marie (Blackmore) Hammond. John Hammond was a "Bye from the Bay", Conception Bay. He was born and raised on the red rocks of its iron ore shores and he never forgot his roots. He wrote about its history and culture in his many books as he was an accomplished author and NL. historian. Through his almost 50 years with Joan in active ministry for their Lord, they worked throughout NB, NS, NL, and Ontario, sometimes in conditions that only God's love could explain. He had a style all his own to reach deeply into the community for the cause of Christ. John Hammond was a friend of people and he will be sadly missed, for now. We know we will see him again. John will be sadly missed by a loving family, his brother and sisters; Lorne (Aina), Marion Mercier (Paul), Doreen Vanhumbeck (Fred), Judy Warford (Wayne); his children, Marie Callaghan (Kevin), Leila Paddock (Dean), James ( Susan), Mike, Sean, Margaret Hammond- Cotter (Donnie), adopted child, Crystal ( Jamie),birth mother, Cathy, adopted child, Amanda, birth mother Marie; his foster children, Marie Wolfe (Dale), and Cathy Doey (Jim); loved by his grandchildren, Lorne, Melissa, Peter, Kyra, Alyssa, Sophia, Aleea, Cameron, Kail, Kinton, Kelsee, Keygan, Tanya, and Jerry; and great- grandchildren, Shelby, Frances, and Jack James as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a wonderful younger sister, Marge. No visitation by request. A Funeral service will take place on Friday, July 23 at 2 P.M. at the Osborne Baptist Church with Rev. James Hammond officiating. Interment in Osborne Harbour Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Osborne Harbour Church.
