The family announce, with heavy hearts, the passing of Thomas Hawco on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex, with loved ones gathered around him.
Born in Sydney, Tom was the son of the late John and Lucy (Kelly) Hawco.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary (Roston); brothers, Timothy Hawco and Donald Moss.
Tom is survived by his son, Thomas 'Butch' and wife, Melissa; daughters, Lucy (Glen Drake) and Lillian (Shaun Corbett), all of Sydney; nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friend, Irma Stone; sisters-in-law, Alma Davison, Betty Dunphy and Evelyn Moss; brother-in-law, Arnold Roston.
Tom was a veteran of the second world war, serving overseas from 1939-1945 in England, France, Italy, Holland and Germany. After returning home, he worked with Sydney Steel. He was the owner/operator of Hawco's taxi and Mary Joe's Restaurant, Whitney Pier. In his day, Tom was an avid horseman, being inducted into the Horseman's Hall of Fame and a member of the Cape Breton Horsemen's Association. He enjoyed afternoons with his coffee club at Tim Hortons (Benny, Joe, Bernie and the late Alex MacInnis) and spending summer evenings on the boardwalk.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Taigh Na Mara and the Glace Bay Hospital, as well as his family doctor and friend, Murdock Smith.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Saturday 10 a.m., with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
