Sister Dorothy Hoffarth, formerly Sister Anne Joseph, 83, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in the 63rd year of her religious life.
Born in Lebret, Sask., Sr. Dorothy was one of 10 children of the late Herbert and Susan (Schill) Hoffarth.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on Aug. 16, 1945, pronounced her first vows on Aug. 15, 1947 and her perpetual profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1950. After her profession of vows, Sister spent most of her life in ministry as dietary supervisor in institutions operated by the congregation. In Nova Scotia she served at Bethany, and the R. K. MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish, and at St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay. In Ontario she served at St. Augustine's Seminary, Scarborough and St. Pius X Seminary, Ottawa. She also ministered at St. Michael's General Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta., and St. Michael's Hospital in Broadview, Sask.
In 1978 Sr. Dorothy received a Diploma in Food Management from Fontbonne College, St. Louis, MO. and qualified for membership in the Society of Food Service Supervisors, American Dietetic Association. In 2001 she retired to St. Monica Convent in Lethbridge, where she engaged in volunteer work and served as local bursar for the sisters living there. Because of failing health, in June of 2008 Sister Dorothy returned to Bethany's Extended Care Unit, where she remained until her death.
Sr. Dorothy is survived by sisters, Clara Pletz, Margaret Pawelko, Marcella Brodner, Shirley Logel and brother, Lionel.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Kosedy, Mary Duelien and brothers, James and Thomas.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Friday, July 30, 2010 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, of Antigonish.
