PICTOU/DURHAM - Aikens, Oswald Robert "Ossie", 91, of the Northumberland Veteran's Unit, Pictou, and formerly of Durham, passed away peacefully July 31, 2010, in the unit.
Born in New Glasgow, April 3, 1919, he was a son of the late Peter Annie (Schrader) Aikens.
While serving overseas in the armed forces during the Second World War, Ossie met and married Peggy, and brought her back to Canada.
He worked as a pipefitter/millwright at different places over the years, retiring from TrentonWorks.
He had been a former councillor for the Town of Trenton, was for many years, service officer with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou, and was a member and choir member of West River Presbyterian Church, Durham. He also sang with the Pictou Men's Choir and played with the Pictou County Old Time Fiddlers.
Recognized by the Red Cross for his many blood donations, Ossie will be remembered for his good sense of humour, happy disposition, and willingness to help others whenever he could.
He is survived by daughters, Sheila Campbell, New Glasgow; Margaret (Stephen) Cameron, New Glasgow; grandsons, Stephen (Sandra) Cameron, Lower Barney's River; Dwayne (Janie) Cameron, Yarmouth; Ozzy Campbell, Stellarton; great-grandchildren: Brock, Colton, John Rachael Cameron, Kaylee Noah Campbell; sister, Joyce (Bill) Larisey, New Glasgow/Trenton; and brother, Ross (Mary) Aikens, Trenton.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Peggy; and brother, Harold.
Visitation was held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday from the West River Presbyterian Church, Durham, with Rev. Barb Fotheringham and Michael Simmons officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or a charity of your choice.
The family wish to thank the staff of the Northumberland Veteran's Unit for the exceptional care given to Ossie over the last five years.
