It was with great sadness the family announced the passing of their beloved mother, Stella Alfreda McGill, age 92, of Newport Corner, Hants County. She was also a very proud grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Stella passed away peacefully on Monday, August 2, 2010, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on December 4, 1917, in Inglisville, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, she was the only child of the late James and Susie (Gates) Best, and after their death, Stella, at a very early age of two, was raised by her grandparents, Joseph and Bessie (Medicraft) Gates. Her love of music and her faith in God was shown through her dedication of 40 plus years as organist of the Ardoise Union Church. She was the beloved director and founder of the Ardoise Choir, who is still active today. She was a long term member, president and past secretary-treasurer, of the Newport Corner Ladies Aid. She was a member of the South Rawdon Baptist Church, and was also treasurer and past organist of the Newport Corner Sunday School. She was an avid quilter, and every stitch was sewn with special love. Stella was a member of the Gospel Group "Family Circle", for 16 years, which consisted of herself, her three daughters (Effie, Florence and Carolyn) and three granddaughters (Marsha, Penny and Sherry). Stella will be sadly missed by all her family, many friends, and by all who knew her. She is survived by her sons, Chester (Stella) McGill, Mount Albert, ON; Kenneth (Elizabeth) McGill, New Minas; Richard McGill, at home; Effie (Merle) Mailman, Lockhartville; Florence (John) MacDonald, Windsor; Carolyn (Garnet) Connors, Brooklyn, Hants Co.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Stella was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Theodore Llewelyn McGill; her parents, James and Susie (Gates) Best; her grandparents, Joseph and Bessie (Medicraft) Gates, and a foster brother, Carl Ruggles. Visitation was 6-9 p.m. Thursday, August 5th, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Friday, August 6th, 2010, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Clarence Bungay officiated, followed by a reception in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. The family, then proceeded to the Ardoise Union Church for a short private family service, then to the Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix, for a private family committal. Donations in memory of Stella, were requested to be made to the Ardoise Union Church Memorial Fund or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
